A lawyer from Wall Street, Alexander Cushing, first came to Squaw Valley in 1945. Though he broke his ankle when first attempting to ski in Squaw Valley, he was still throughly impressed with the area and the idea of turning skiing into a career. Cushing gathered his own personal money as well as investments from a few friends to pursue his dream. Though having to overcome a few problems, the resort opened in 1949 with only one chairlift, rope toe, and a small lodge. His efforts to host the 1960 Winter Olympics paid off, and today Squaw Valley USA is recognized as a world-renowned ski resort.
Though Squaw Valley may have started with only one chairlift, today it offers one of the most expansive lift networks in the country. Their lift system ensures people spend their time skiing instead of waiting in line. One of the larger ski areas in the nation, Squaw Valley is made up of 4,000 skiable acres covered in 70 plus runs.
